SCOTTISH NATIONAL STANDARD BEARER: Peter Dow

The BBC VE Day Announcement, 7th May 1945

Wikipedia: Winston Churchill - Role as wartime Prime Minister

Sound: The BBC announces (on the 7th May 1945) that "tomorrow, Tuesday," (8th May 1945) "will be treated as Victory in Europe day"

The BBC History website has a nice article entitled BBC - History - Winston Churchill: Defender of Democracy

I regret to say however that there seems to be a technical problem which shows up when I use an active link and open this BBC Web page in a new window - the BBC page displays OK but when you close the window, Internet Explorer (7) crashes. Therefore what I will do is simply give the text of the link -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/churchill_defender_01.shtml

which you can copy and paste into the address bar of an entirely new browser process (START -> Internet Explorer) if you want to view that page. I have contacted the BBC History website about this bug and it is up to them to make their page compatable with IE or contact Microsoft to iron out the bug in IE7 if that is what it is.
Obviously, I don't want to have a link on my webpage which is going to crash my website - someone needs to fix it otherwise Wikipedia will become the accepted source on the web for information on Winston Churchill and not the BBC - very strange indeed. Gremlins at work!
